I lost the ability to transmit on my Narco 12D on the way home. I tried both headsets and both seat positions. Anyone have a pointer for where I should start looking?

Seriously, it would help to know a little bit about your setup? Do you have an intercom, etc, etc, etc?

I'm assuming that you are receiving so that would rule out the antenna connection. Assuming there is an intercom, I'd check the connections between the radio and the intercom, check continuity for each wire. Also check that the push to talk switch works correctly.

A schematic of your system would help bunches in long distance trouble shooting.

I do have an intercom. The trouble (no transmit) is the same with the intercom on or off. I just had a new PTT installed on the pilot side. It worked fine on the way out. Frase said my transmitions were fuzzy somewhere later in day 2. I get the same result from both headsets switched around to both the pilot side and PAX. Sorry, Bruce, but I do not have a wiring diagram. Was wondering if this is possible with a loose coax.

Jim - As Lee suggested above.. if you get a click when you PTT, then the radio is probably ok. Also, does the Narco 12D have a "transmit inidicator?" Another easy check.

Loose or open coax would drastically shorten the range of your transmissions. An easy test is to listen on a handheld. Check all your coax connections, especially any that have been handled recently. I had a wierd one once in a Pawnee...I had a ratty coax connection re-done by a radio-ham buddy, but he the center pin turned out to be slightly short, and therefore didn't quite connect. Result... a range of 50 ft.

BTW - it is apparently quite hard on radios to transmit without an antennae on to absorb the power, so be careful.

I just get a click (carrier and no voice). I tried to listen to it on my hand held. I also tried transmitting to a base station at Roosevelt field in Utah. My Narco does have the "T" in the transmit window. I think the radio is fine, but the mess up is in the wiring somewhere.

BTW, the handheld was about 5 feet away and the base station was 20 yards. Same result, carrier only.

The other possibility is that the radio is emitting a carrier but it is not modulated with voice, i.e. some thing in side broke.

I'm not sure if avionics shops have the data to work on Narco radios because you had to send them to the factory for any service work. Note, the factory is no longer, they're out of business.

Before you go handing over your check book ...

Check the mic line between the intercom and the radio, sounds like you can hear yourself talk on the intercom but are still unable to transmit, that would suggest that you have good mic connections from the intercom to the jacks. Since the problem exists on both sides (pass and pilot) the common thread is the mic line running from the radio to the intercom box. Not sure if you wired your airplane or not, but in case you did not, the mic and phone lines should be shielded, the others most likely are not, that should narrow it down to 2 wires coming out of your tray and going to the intercom, just check them both.

You can also try pulling the radio and running an eraser on the contacts and push it back in the tray, you could have a little corrosion and or a dirty contact causing issues.
