Thorp Air Command - T18.net

Whelen PDF attched. Not sure how new the product is, but Whelen (Made in the USA) has a compact led strobe unit. It is the Whelen Vertex Hide-a-Way Super LED P/N VTX609. Police, Fire and Emergency vehicles use them. The actual LED strobe head fits into a 1" hole and protudes about 7/8 of an inch. Fully wired to a small compact power supply and the strobe pattern is adjustable. Comes in clear, red, blue and amber. They range from about $65.00 to $120 + shipping...same unit, just different suppliers. 5 year warranty from Whelen. I was looking for a SMALL lite weight red anti-collision lite and this one looks to fill the bill. I will post a pic when it arrives and is installed.

I bought and have installed on the Thorp a similar setup from Under Body Led. These are used on commercial vehicles and have a dozen strobe patterns. The drawback with my setup is your have to turn on power and then push the strobe button to activate. They work quite well although not as bright as aircraft strobes.

Found these at the Evil Walmart Corporation. There are some options for speed and number of flashes, but not as many as the "emergency vehicle" strobes.

The lamps are small but highly focused, which might not be ideal.

You could put the 'highly fosued' leds together and aim them in the desired pattern. A pexiglass streamlined cover would probably be enough of a diffuser to do the rest?

This is always a big topic over in RV land, where some people throw money at a problem, and others figure out a DIY solution.

My Whelen 1 inch red strobe installed. Great ouput for such a small unit. Driver built into the line, just hook up power and grd and good to go ! Entire unit weighs less than 1 pound. No separate button to push. Hook it directly to your strobe switch. $90.00 if I remember right ?

Is it safe to say you can put a red or white strobe one the bottom of the fuse like the post before mine rather than do the vert tail or rudder strobe, I am trying to think ahead, also I am shopping for the led strobes/ nav.
Any good deals out there?

Not sure if you can find a more compact unit or lighter one than the one I installed. You can even change the flash rate. Very bright strobe even in the day. Whelen unit. Very easy hook up. Comes pre wired...grd/pwr wire, drill a hole for the lens to go thru and you're pretty much done ! I used the Kuntzleman wing tip white strobe/position lite units. No need to install the tail white lite as the wing tip units has the rear facing white lite. I put the strobe on the belly as it lights up the ground area below the A/C also. Installing it on top would of the fus. or tail would seem to increase the annoying effect of the strobe in the cockpit. IMHO

I agree, I would prefer putting the strobe on the belly also, looks nice!

I briefly had a top mounted strobe/beacon. I didn't notice it at night, the angle of the rear deck pretty much blanks it out. That being said you do not need a strobe on the fuselage at all if your tip strobes are visible from behind. Same goes for nav lights.

True statement. For $90.00 the red strobe makes me feel better. I fly out of a field (KSEE) that has TWO foreign student flight schools ! Anything I can do to make me more visible makes me happy ! I also installed the Kuntzleman LED landing lite and have that on when I taxi. The Kuntzleman Combo wing tip strobe position lites meet the lite requirements.

Looks like well built products.

The CB/power power panel looks interesting, but the strobe/nav lites might be a little difficult to attach to our wing tips ?
