I would try E-Bay first, but that may not be any less expensive than the route you're on now. You say upgrade ? But to what ? If your new panel includes a separate transponder unit (unless it is an all-in-one EFIS unit with radio, transponder, etc), then I say use that $500 now towards that new transponder. Depending on the age of your unit now, it may not be the best $$$ spent to fix it now and then later. At least with a new unit you have at least a 1 year warranty...maybe ?

The new transponders do not have that expensive "cavity" that seems to give all the old transponders trouble. Money well spent on new. Some of the new glass panels have a transponder built in. I have seen on Barnstormers King 76A's for around $500. Although this is old school. Narco went out of business, stay away from the K79 or 76.
