If I had to do over my tank , I would make the larger tank like David Read did . I think his is 40 gallons ? No need for wing tanks , pumps , extra hoses etc .

Thierry : My tank is staying right where it is . You have the perfect opportunity to upgrade from the standard tank to an extended range tank . I know Mike and Richard don't make the larger tank , but Lou ....? Lou is an outstanding welder ! This might be an area that does not infringe on Mike or Richard with regard to copyright laws . When I was building , I looked at the standard tank and thought there might be a way to increase the size of the tank ? David Read did that .

Bearing in mind, of course, that the Read Tank also requires a modern panel to free up the space for more fuel.

Dick : This is true , but I think Thierry is in a good position with the old tank out . Not sure what type avionics he had in the old panel , but now would be a good time for an upgrade in that area also if needed so he could install a larger tank . I just like the idea of a larger main tank as opposed to the wing/drop tanks .

I do too. Depending on motor and prop selection, of course. The W n B could be a bit out of control for a big motor with CS.

I have a 0-320 engine. No prop at this time.
I have the possibility to install a CS prop but is heavy.
I have 3 different prop in my target.

40 gallons in the front... I have to check the W and B. Maybe to nose heavy???
I have to rebuilt all my wing centre section. Wet wings is not my best option. I like the external fuel tanks but the 5mph speed lost is my trouble.
I know is the time to take a decision and make some modification because when I finish this project I don't want in 2 years to re-open all the panel and install other stuff inside my T18!

What is the best way, stay with the original fuel design or....

Cubes is right . CS will add a butt load of weight to the nose , even with a composite CS.

Round numbers I found are...

Metal CS around 40 + pounds .

Metal fixed pitched 30 + pounds

AD prop 13 pounds .

If you want more fuel I think that a “Read tank” Is the way to go but 40 gal may be over shooting the mark by four to six gallons. Hold a standard 29 gallon tank in your hands, damn that’s a lot of gas.
If SOMEBODY wants to go to the trouble to start building more than one XL center tank then it would be a very good idea for you/us/Mr. Read to kick this around a bit and come up with a consensus on just what is the perfect size. Obviously David’s experience will be most valuable.

There is a lot of work that goes into building one of these things and it does nobody any good to have a bunch of different sizes of tanks floating around out there. A new tank pretty much means new tooling of some sort.


For me, sure I could use more range as I’m being lured deeper into the mid west for flying and BBQ but for now I’m focusing on less weight and less drag.

40 gallons is lot of weight. Around 240 pounds on the nose versus the standard 175 pounds.
Around 36 gallons is better for me.

I know I have no reason to full the 40 gallons tank each time I flew the plane but is lot of weight...
