Is there any operational experience with a full span aileron hinge? Is rear spar bending a concern for a full span hinge, creating a possible bind? Thanks, Jon Linke #1321 |

Reason for installing a full span hinge ? Makes gettin that hinge pin in a bit of a talley wack ! Plus the extra weight. RB |

There is a reference somewhere back in a NL or the forum re: a binding problem. If I can find it I'll post it. Mac Nussey |

Mac is right. I had this conversation with my dad years ago (aspiring young engineer's curiosity). Dad never discouraged that when it came to the airplane and mailed off a letter to John Thorp. The response was that a full span piano hinge was a no no in his book due to the potential for binding. |

As a wee lad I to remember such discussions & I think someone had actually built a plane that way. They quickly found aileron stick forces extremely high. |

I came across this subject a while back, not sure exactly where. May have been a very early NL or post ? RB |

Lu Sunderland Quote from NL 03/06/1972 "The full-length aileron hinge makes a good seal, but is not a good idea because of the potential for high binding friction. When I added two segments to the S-18 aileron hinge because of reported wear in T-18 hinges, John Thorp was upset. He said that he had gone to great pains to reduce the aileron control friction to a minimum and hated to see anyone put friction in the system unnecessarily. Since it is impossible to get perfect alignment between the mating halves of a piano hinge, there is inevitable binding in the hinge as it rotates and forces the two mating structures to bend by an amount equal to the misalignment." |
