Post subject:  Eco-friendly paint stripping suggestions

Hi All,
I just returned from Florida with my family’s old Thorp T-18, and I’m starting the restoration project. (I’ll post an intro shortly and try to post regular progress reports.) Special thanks to Bob & Susan Highley for flying over to OMN to reminisce and give restoration hints!

Anyway,...

I need to strip the paint (Amerflint epoxy, c. 1972). I’m trying to stay as eco-friendly as possible. (Last time I did a major stripping project was around 40 years ago and we just hosed it onto the driveway. :-[)

Does anybody have recommendations pro/con on products and techniques?

Thanks!
-Steve

Steve, on the recommendation of your dad, I too used Amerflint II. It still looked good after twenty-seven years. I took the plane to a professional paint shop where I stripped it in their facility. It is some of the nastiest paint ever made. The residue must be collected and disposed of in an EPA approved procedure. I know that's not what you want to hear, but you probably need to consult with a professional in your area.

Hey Bob,

Thanks. Not what I wanted to hear but what I wanted to know. :)

Doug said you’d probably be the one I should check with. ;)

Thanks again!

-Steve
