In conjunction with our conversation at KY Dam after dinner. According to the FAA database there are 353 actively registered Thorps (T-18 and S-18) in the US as of 10/12/2010. Incidentally the FAA provides the entirety of their aircraft records to anyone who wants such a thing. Here's the breakdown ... COUNT STATE 60 CA 39 TX 19 FL 19 IL 17 OK 15 WA 14 AZ 13 CO 12 UNK 10 GA 10 OR 10 MI 9 NV 8 MO 7 NC 7 KS 5 NY 5 NJ 5 OH 5 DE 4 WI 4 MN 4 SC 4 IA 4 LA 3 AR 3 AL 3 TN 3 SD 3 ID 3 IN 3 PA 3 UT 2 MD 2 NM 2 AK 2 VA 2 CT 2 NE 2 ME 1 WV 1 ND 1 VT 1 MA 1 KY 1 NH |

A few other interesting numbers (USA Only) .... There are; 6439 RV's (4,6,7,8,9,10) 148 Tailwinds (W8, W10) 177 Mustang II If you take the RV's out of the equation the Thorp is still at the top of the food chain! |

I would like to find the people in New Jersey who have Thorps. Where do I have to go at the FAA site to get the information? I tried going on the site once and didn't get very far. Kurt Stofko |

Problem is that a lot of Thorps are listed by the builders name and not Thorp T/S-18. In my case it is a Williams-Thorp S-18. I would sugest using different combinations. |

Just looking at the No. of Thorps in the US (353 total). You have more than double the number just in Calfornia than we have here in Australia. We have 29 on the Register in Oz and 4 in NZ. On my list I have 6 Builders in Oz and one in Papua/New Guinea. As most would be aware I have been getting an Email Address List for Thorp Owners and Builders in Aust. New Zealand and PNG. The Builders are the hard ones to find. SO If you are building or owner a Thorp or if you are on the list and changed your email address since going on the List could you please let me know by emailing me at grothy@hotkey.net.au so we can have mutual contact in this part of the World. This does not replace any other established support. Good onya John Groth |

Thank you. I appreciate that. It will help me to connect with other builders, so I can get started on mine. Kurt |

There are 19-20 in Canada depending on whether Lee's plane came to Canada or not. Jim Mantyla |

And add one more to that Canadian number, Jim. MLM isn't officially registered yet, so it won't show in the database. Maybe next Spring. DW |

Dick, I assumed yours would cancel out Robert Affleck's plane that was lost in Windsor about a year ago. I heard that there was a guy in Guelph that was considering Lee's plane but haven't heard anything lately. Lee, Where did your plane end up? Jim Mantyla |

Your search of Tailwinds did not capture all of them. In a similar study for Tailwinds done about 8-9 years ago, there were 282 of them registered in the FAA database, and that did not include Cougars which are essentially Tailwind clones. Also those who did the search (myself and another fellow) believe that we still missed at least some because of the wide variety of mispellings of "Wittman", and those who had different names for their airplanes than Tailwind, W-10 or W-8. And since then, there are at least couple per year that are finished and flying. Dave (Tailwind, Thorp, Pitts & other misc. owner) |

You're right Dave. To be honest I was not as diligent with the Wittman and MII numbers as I was the T-18. I was just trying point out that the T-18 still outnumbers most other Experimentals (sans the Rv's of course). |

No doubt there are more Thorps than Tailwinds or others (of course RVs excepted). Also tends to be more of them at Oshkosh and other gatherings, and more Thorp gatherings too. Tailwind owners seem to be more quiet and shy types. Though, now that I think about it, there are a lot of Pitts of various types out there...... |
