I had a beautiful flight yesterday (Saturday) in and around the foothills of the Rockies, west of Denver. Perfect weather, blue skies & probably 100 miles visibility. Same blue skies this morning, but looking out my back door the trees were swinging and bending and the sky was populated with this... a very good sign that it's not a good day to go flying downwind, in or around the mountains. Those ragged ones, along with the beautiful lenticulars are talking to me loud & clear - "Don't even think about it". Weather moving in with a little snow tonight.

The sailplane folks LOVE lenticular clouds. They'd be up there in a heart beat.

Hence the "mountain wave avoidance route" that takes us south of Denver.

Got "caught" in a mountain wave heading from PHL to LAX in the Bus . Just East of Denver and it felt like we were on a surf board ! AS increased to the Barber Pole (no PIREPS or heads up from our dispatcher...we were on our flight planned route) . :o As we enter the "wave" and speed increased we "throttled" back to almost idle to keep the speed below the Mach knocker ! ??? Only lasted for about a minute ? :P We got to LAX 5 minutes early ! 8) Our gate was not open . That was the bad News . >:( NO BOOM !
