I was recently informed that Gene passed away. He was 90!
He built an OshKosh award winner back in the day. That plane is still flying.
Condolences.

So sorry to hear of this. Think of Gene often when I travel up I-24 in TN and pass the Murfreesboro exit where Gene's son, Tom, has a motorcycle shop. Always meant to stop in to check up on Gene and visit Tommy's store. Shouldn't put those things off. RIP Gene.

hey yuall, this is Tommy Sloan, Genes son, Daddy passed away peacefully at home with friends and family around. He was 90 yrs and 1 month old. with the Bible open to the 23 palsm , He built N805GS from about the late 60s until june of 86, took it to Oshkosh in 87, it won a gold lindy for outstanding craftsmanship, while landing at Oshkosh in a downpour passing a cub on the roll out got off to the edge of the runway stricking two runway lights. One mised the the prop and struck the rt gear leg. the other hit the leading edge on the rt outboard wing. We rented a Ryder van and trucked it home, Year and a half later with a new outboard skin and rear main spar and gear leg cover it was flying again! In 1990 it received the Wright bros award at Dayton Oh. at the Air Force museum. The Thorp bunch honard it with the Lu Sutherland award. I flew The Thorp from 2002 until a couple years ago when i died on the hanger floor at work. A customer and some coworkers performed CRP for 9 minutes when the EMTs showed up, they shocked me three times. A sexteplet bypass and a month at ST Thomas in Nashville a month at home i went back to work at Murfreesboro Avaition as an a&p. should be able to get my medical back if i can pay off my cardiologist. Theres a picture i saw on the sight labeled memory lane, its of an early thorp, i think its from Rockford around 1965, standing in front of that thorp is my dad holding my 6 yr old hand, my older brother is there too, im pretty sure thats when my dad knew he was going to build a thorp. Hope to see every one at KY Dam!
