Does anyone know if a wide deck 0-360 will fit inside a standard T-18 cowl? Any "gotchas" with a wide deck engine and the Thorp airframe?

Wide deck and narrow deck motors are dimensionally the same for all practical purposes. Angle valve 0360 s are a different story though, theyre not recommended.

As Lee pointed out the dimensions are the same, the difference is in the cylinder bases. Why they call them wide deck/ narrow deck is a mystery. The narrow deck cylinder base flange is 1/4" thick and uses a re-inforcement plate the hold the cylinder. The wide deck has a 3/8" thick base and bolts on directly.

Bill: thought there was more differences so I consulted a reference that I have (Paul McBride, recognized worldwide as an expert on engines, retired after almost 40 years with Lycoming).

Good article. I think the bolt patterns are different on the two engines as there was a change on how the crankcase through bolts were installed. He did not answer the question "why they called them WD vs ND?" I guess Lycoming was referring to the cylinder bases.

Paul was referring to the "deck" of the cylinder. Cases are dfferent, as well in the way the alternator is attached. As Lee said, the dimensions are the same.
