Hi Folks!

I don't want to restard a discussion, but I just want to do a quick survey about the best engine for the Thorp!
Engine size between:
-290
-290-d2
-320 (no 160hp)

I'm an aircraft mechanic and I know good and bad side of the engine on the survey list!
Thanks for the answer ;)

Yep, I agree Thierry, that list you have there represents the best for the Thorp, might add in the 360 also for good measure. Any one of these will do a good job in the Thorp. Preference plays an important role here I believe, I could be wrong but I think at least some would agree with me. I have flown the Thorp with 200HP, and with 135HP, loved em both, Thorps are Special they are all go fast machines and they are good looking.I think one would be hard pressed to find another flying machine that offers such a wide array of options when it comes to power plants, and then can maximize which ever power you choose, which ever way you choose, your Thorp will not be a slouch. You my friend, are in for a whole lot of fun, pick an option and get er Done........Dan

Mine had an O-290 on it and then I put on an O-360. I was completely happy with the performance of the 290. The guy I got to do the first test flight of my plane took off and pitched that sucker what looked like straight up from the ground! I was thinking to myself, who in the world did I get to test fly this thing?! After the swap to the 360, I get compliments about the way my plane performs on takeoff and they way it sounds.

Long story short, would have to agree with Dan that it comes down to personal preference. One thing that does come to mind: Do you think that 0-320 parts may be easier to obtain should any maintenance issues arise?

0-290 parts are harder to come by no doubt.

Ok Thierry, from a mechanics perspective, give us the low down on the ins and outs on the Lycoming line of engines for the Thorp. Tell us about what you have seen and experienced with these power plants through your years of experience, just an overview will be fine. Dan
