Post subject: | Dynamic Balance propeller- top cowl removal |
So, I'm going to have my C/S prop dynamically balanced this weekend. I understand the basic process. My question for those that have done it on their T18s, is, does the top cowl need to be removed for mounting of the sensor? And, if so, is it okay to run up the engine multiple times without the top cowl in place? My concern is that the lower cowl is not well supported in this scenario, and could possibly interfere with the back of the rotating spinner. (not good!) What has been your experience in the mechanics of the process? Thanks! Peter |

You will probably have to take the whole cowl off. Tie the tail wheel down good. I tie mine to my truck wheel. You will not be able to hold the plane with brakes at the RPM you will need for a good balance job. |

Thanks Bob, That's the heads-up that I needed. I'll remove all of the cowling.... And will tie the tailwheel to my truck! Peter |

I agree, I was afraid to balance my prop with only the bottom cowl installed, so removed all the cowling. |

To close this out... I removed all of the cowling, chalked, and tied the tail spring to my truck. After a few runups to 2350 rpm (my typical cruise rpm,) with varying amounts of weight added, the balance went from .68 to .36 to .06 ips. I guess that's an improvement. Buttoned it back up and flew it briefly- it does seem smoother. Hope that's not some placebo effect! Looking forward to flying it a LOT this summer! Thanks guys! Peter |
