Post subject:  Project questions

I'm finishing up my build and have a few questions.
Aileron hinge pin. What is the common way to retain or to
safety the pins?
Cowling. Is a support normally used at the cowl side exit (fiberglass cowl)
or are rigid enough?
I will try and post pics.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
Hope these sketches help, there are a few ways to secure the aileron hinge pins, I like this one the most. You could also secure them in the same fashion to the upper edge of the wing skin. Regardless you want the pins coming in from the center of the aileron and inserted towards the outside. The other way does not work so well (at least that was my experience).

Nice airplane, Mark! How about some more pictures of the build and/or the finished product?

I wish I had a photo of how I did it, but I got the idea from Dan. I used a scrap piece of hinge and secured the "bent" portion of the pin to the aileron beam, thru the outer bolt. I did it for the ailerons and the trim tabs on the hor. tail. No safety wire or drilling required ! Makes for a clean install ! The only safety wire I used for the control surfaces was for the top and bottom rudder bolt.

Sure looks good Mark, If it's not an imposition post a few more pics when you get the time. That piece of hinge does work pretty good don't it Rich, good thing we swapped ideas during our builds it made things move right along. Also, it is good inspiration for those long hot summer days and cold winter evenings of building. Finish er up Mark, it's obvious that you are going to deserve all the good times to come, it looks like you really worked at it....Dan

I also took Dan's idea for the aileron hinge. Works like a charm and looks clean (no need to safety wire).

Thanks for the drawing Lee, I thought it would have to be done in such a way.
Also using a little piece of hinge section for retention is a great idea.
And thanks for the nice comments.
I hope to schedule the DAR shortly, few more items to finish up.
I'll post some more pics.
Thanks,
Mark
