Post subject:  Static Port Location

Before I drill any holes I thought I'd check and see if anyone has any feedback on static port placement. I've read the recommendation in newsletter 91 (forward of station 139 & just below W.L.42. Is that the location most people use?

Thanks,

Marshall

My static port is on my pitot mast... works well.

What works best for me is: Blade pitot/static pickup on wing (ala Cherokee) hooked up to altimeter, VVI, and altitude encoder. Airspeed static open to cockpit air. This configuration has proven to be most accurate for me. Traditional holes on side of fuselage are affected by the Thorp cowling side outlets. As John said, the tail mast pick up per the plans is the most accurate. Some have reported erroneous readings at high angles of attack, however.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've got a piper blade at the moment, but it proved unsuitable as a static source. I'm planning on using it for AOA going forward. I've got a spare pitot static mast for my Pitts, guess I'll go with that.

Thanks,

Marshall

Has anyone had a good solution for a heated pitot? My static is located on the pitot mast as well. I want to get pitot heat, but I'm not seeing any reasonable options for heated pitot/static...just pitot.

Thanks,

Stephen

Usually an alternate static port (vented to the cabin) is the solution for this. I have not seen a heated static port on any GA airplane less than 12,500.
