Hi All,

I am the proud new owner of ZS-UIE, a South African (Johannesburg) based Thorp T18C. She was flying up until 2009 where she suffered some damage due to a groundloop (no major damage). The previous owner was in the process of restoring her, but has decided to emigrate and can't take the plane with him.

I am very excited to join the community, and will be asking for lots of your advice going forward!

Attached are some pics.

Regards,

Marc

Hi All,

ZS-UIE was put on hold temporarily due to me not being able to get back to South Africa due to Covid restrictions, however thanks to some help from my old man, the process has started.

Initial inspection of the airframe showed that she was in good shape with no significant issues. Paint has been stripped off and all components are looking very good with some minor repairs to be done.

The engine components have been cleaned and NDT done. All in good condition!

I've acquired a 3 blade Catto prop and will be fitting electronic ignition and fuel injection, with Superior Millennium high compression pistons. Lightweight flywheel, alternator and starter. This IO-360 parallel valve is going to be light and powerful 8)

I've attached some progress pics. Will update as progress continues.

On a side note, I will be visiting the States from the 28 April until the 4th May. If anyone is planning on flying their T18 and needs a passenger, please let me know! I own a Thorp, but I've never flown in one before!

Cheers,

Marc

I'll be landing at LAX on the evening of the 27th, then departing Minneapolis on the 4th. I can travel anywhere in the States... Luckily I can hop on any Delta or United flight courtesy of my Employer 8)

I don't have any set plans yet, so very flexible.

Hello MarG,

Could eventually join this forum. How is the restoration going?

She is a beautiful aeroplane and handles like a dream.

We were privileged to own her for a while in the 80’s and early 90’s.

Living in Australia now. Maybe coming to South Africa this year. Would love to catch up and see her again.

Please take good care of her.

Thanks and Best Regards
Andreas
