I have already printed signs for "our WEST Coast group" flying in according to the "NOTAM"/EAA HBP . Do we need an additional "sign" saying "T-18" parking ? I did not see this on the EAA site ? ???

Hi Gang, I just made arrangements to get 1 day at OSH.
To keep from interfering in the family vacation - which starts on the 30th. I'll fly into Milwaukee and rent a car to drive the hour and half to KOSH.
With any luck I'll be there in time for the "Mass Arrival".

See you there,

Today, I got a reminder of the skills needed to fly into OSH during the big "shew". I was returning to home plate, LAL, and was sequenced behind a Cessna 172 from about 8 miles out on left base for RW 9. Besides the four of us return from breakfast, the pattern was full of a variety of trainers. The 172 was in no hurry to jump in the fray, so he took up 1.3 times his stall speed for a proper airspeed (for him!) in the ATA. I slowed the Thorp to 90 kts and fell in behind him. About 85 mph was more like the speed needed to not close and still I needed to widen it out on close base.

It is 16 NM from RIPON to OSH not including any excursion to get to the duty RW. You will be required to keep 1/2 mile spacing on the guy ahead on the inbound leg or will be sent back to RIPON. I would suggest each of you go out and practice flying at 90 KTS for an extended time in the low altitude arena. Much of the maneuvering around OSH is done at 500 AGL. Not much room for error. Transponders are off so that fancy gadget you bought will not show traffic; it is a heads out game.

Fly safe -- see you there!

I'm gonna piggyback Bob's excellent thunder on this....when I flew the FISK arrival, I had the flaps down and power up a bit (though do not remember the RPM - this is what needs practice) - this gave me better viz over the schnozz so as not to drive up and sever the tail of a Patriotic Tigress, and hence endure the wrath of Cubes. It werked well, though yer plane ain't my plane. In other werds, find out the best configuration for slow flight and your comfert zone.

In the pattern at KSEE I try to fly no faster than 90 mph as there is a high concentration of student traffic in the pattern . When I start my descent into any ATA I slow up a fair piece out ....way out especially if I hear there are other non high performance ( raised rivet) AC landing ! The other reason I tend to fly slow is to build time for an airline job ! ???

We have a cub & a Luscombe in our breakfast bunch - regularly fly formation with them (although I can only see sky off the nose). Great way to learn the feel of your plane.

Lou,
Are your plans firming up? Mine are and I still plan to go on Friday. Do you want to meet and travel together? Is there anyone else from the west coast (I am in norhter San Diego) leaving on Friday that wants to go as a group?

It’s looking like a Saturday start, but it’s still up in the air, so to speak. My plan so far is to start from Fox @ 02 early, first gas and B fast at Winslow AZ. Second stop, Dalhart TX. Third stop Abilene KS for BBQ and gas. Forth stop Oskaloosa IA for a free dinner and bed.

I’m thinking about exercising 2751 this Saturday for a B fast run. Friday I’m flying to Corona for a ACSpruce run if you want to meet up.

Lou.

While I’m in question asking mode, I plan to hit Ripon at 7 AM Sunday 28th with 17 gallons left. So here’s my questions for the leather faced OSH veterans!

What is the “typical morning weather?

How long should I expect it to take to get from Ripon to on the ground sweet ground at OSH? How much time is spent in the holding pattern?

Is the 90KTs @1,800, or 135KTs @2300 the best way to go?

The field opens at 0700. You might find several others at that time. Normally, there is light ground fog until about 0800 depending on the overall weather pattern. Other than wx, you shouldn't have to hold. Ripon is 16 NM from the field; the trip in at 90Kts is about 10 mins.

Be sure to plan an FFP stop (Fuel-Food-Pee) within an hour from OSH! You want to be in good shape for the FISK arrival. And, although chances are good you won't have to hold for very long... you never know. Better to arrive at Ripon with 2 hours of fuel than 30 minutes of fuel.

(I'm planning to arrive IFR via the Interstate Arrival. And yes, I expect to arrive with plenty of gas. Some of it in the tank.)
