Post subject:  Canopy vent

I am thinking of cutting a canopy vent on the rear of the canopy. What is the best way to do that without cracking the canopy? Was thinking of drilling the corners and using a dremel saw to cut the vent out. I thought this would be the easiest way to get some ventilation.

Mark, use a bit made for plexiglass. If you drill using a standard bit, it will grab and crack. A plexiglass bit can be made by grinding the flute so it is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bit. You want to shave, not chip. Drill the smallest hole you can, then follow up with a unibit, which is made to do exactly what I just wrote.
All edges of every edge or hole on plexiglass needs to be smoothed out and polished. Think about the edge looking like the top edge of the window in your car. Also, you never want to cut so long as to melt the plexiglass. That creates stress.

Find a piece of scrap plexiglass to practice on BEFORE you go full bore on the canopy . There are no do overs . :o
