Think in the abstract Lee.....if the extensions were not there then the gear would not be long enough to reach the ground......probably need a few barley pops in your system to understand the engineering behind that comment. Snap back to reality......seems to me like the numbers are adding up to enough people needing gear to justify a production run.......? Wasnt it 4 sets needed to justify the cost of production....? Ok I have a dumb question. 7077J has a standard short (first plans) landing gear. I have 160 hrs ( hundreds ) of take offs and landings. Why is it that you guys are extending the gear? Skeet |

The per plans "short" gear does not put the airplane at a three point attitude. As a result people tend to land on the tail wheel first. To counter this back in the 1970 s the 2" extended gear became the norm. With the leaf tail wheel 2" puts the airplane at a three point, with the rod spring 1" does the trick. We're extending short gears now as thorp landing gear are in short supply and the extensions effectively convert a short gear into a standard gear. |

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the photos and comments. The photo is of the left main gear. And yes the brakes are forward of the gear leg. With all that said, I plan on returning to the stock gear - no extensions. The brakes will go back to the aft position. I plan on removing the leaf tail spring and changing to the ACS tailwheel. Those combinations should give me the proper attitude on the ground and a good landing attitude. Terry |

This thread got me thinking about my gear so I checked the plans. The gear on my T-8 is a full 3 in longer than the plans. I was wondering if long gear was a common modification. Chuck |
