Bob, the wife's and I did Durango a few years back and rode the train to Silverton. We had BBQ lunch in the old jail. There is two airports at Durango, one downtown that is convenient but not good for a fly-in . The other is several miles out of town and has ramp space.

That "other" one is Durango/Animas (the 2 pictures referring to where we stopped for fuel). The ramp area is a little limited, depending on how many aircraft could make it. I'm not sure about any possible hangar space.

How about Sedona Az? Beauty setting and a cool town to boot. Might be expensive tho.

Sedona's beautiful, and a fun flying destination, but it is a noise-sensitive area and there's an overnight fee for all transient users. It sits on a 500' high mesa overlooking the town. Just thinking out-loud.

Hum, Airnav shows there is a lodge and motel on the airport. Has anyone stayed there? This website sounds like they are flyin freindly. http://sedonaairport.org/flyin Daily fee discounted to $5, and a 30cent discount on gas. Does Spring of 2015 or 2016 sound possible?

Or maybe Cottonwood just 14 miles to the SW would be a close alternative. No noise abatement to hamper formation flying and could fly out to Sedona for lunch if the winds are light.

OK now I have to get back to work. Thanks John for the insperation/distraction.

Sedona is a "friendly" fly in spot . I've seen it advertised in the Pacific Flyer and I think it would make a great West Coast Fly In event . They will even help you set up your fly in . I'll contact them for an info packet and see what's involved and what they can do for us . Anyone interested before I pull the trigger ? Cottonwood would be a second choice , but I think Sedona might have a few more events we can chew on ? Ruff planning it looks like less than 3 hours from San Diego to Sedona . The Ginns might have more info on the place ? Spring Fly In for 2014 looks to be U-42 ( Salt Lake) . Sedona would possibly be Spring 2015 ? Just kicking it around . :)

Yes ?

No ?

Maybe ?

Kayenta, AZ is just south of monument valley - a holiday inn and rent a wreck near the airport, but no fuel available - me and the junior estrogen offspring unit flew the T-18 down and stayed there when the red bulls raced around the valley. Stay tuned to the Utah spring fly in thread - we may end up close to there yet. I'm in the zen state of evaluation of facilities yet and still.

Check out these flights over Lake Powell. Not Thorp's but breathtaking, none the less. Don't think I would be this low with only one fan turning though!

Rich - no worries - Bernie - thanks for posting those - I have done a few of those canyons with but one fan - with enough airspeed to pull up over the rim and set it down, but not quite enough to get high enough to open the canopy and clean it before landing though - Southern Utah/Northern AZ is one of the most awesome topographical wonders on earth.

Just doing a ruff intel on the airport lodge at Sedona , it will be a tuff go trying to get rooms there . They are booked to the max a year in advance . There are other Bates Motels close by that would work . ??? I can hear the knife in the shower now ! :o I think Sedona would be a blast for 2015 ! I want to tip a million year old rock . Probably easier than Cow Tipping ? ???

Hi Rich, I vote yes to Sedona or Cottonwood for a Spring 2015 flyin. They are so close together that I would think either one would work for seeing the sights by Thorp or by car. Maybe the weekend of June 13th, 2015?

OK...since Fraser has taken on the task of West Coast fly in 2014 , I'll Ram Rod Sedona 2015 . Spring of 2014 I'll start a sign up list . Based upon the popularity of this area I don't think Spring of 2014 is too early to start the planning . It would be a typical 3 day event . Arrive on a Friday , depart on that Sunday . I'll look at both the Sedona airport and Cottonwood with regard to services, available rooms , transportation , etc.

June ? Have you ever been to AZ in June ? I was thinking more like March, April or Sept. , Oct .

Not June but mid July in Phoenix, muy caliente (hot) :P . Remember Sedona is at 4830 feet elevation, much cooler than Phoenix.
