Might also check the 4130 brackets on the inside of the tail. They can crack. They were originally .063, and were later changed to .090.

Cubes read my feeble mind ! :P I would look for a loose broken bolt . Cracked bracket or a lair of loose rivets . ???

This is a little off the subject, but I picked up a used tail wheel at the fly market as OSH. The tail spring was broken off in the socket and when I tried to remove it, I discovered they had drilled the hole for the bolt off center far enough that i believe that's why the spring broke. Just a note of caution for when you're drilling the tail wheel spring.
