I dunno, maybe this is not as pretty as I think it is... Portland area as seen from 14,000 feet in a Thorp T-18:

Also, since I have an airplane capable of waltzing up to FL 140 and beyond, I have Oxygen on the brain. Never used supplemental O2 in an aircraft before. Would love to borrow a portable system, in case any of y'all are vicinity of Portland OR with one to lend. Or, possibly take one off your hands if the price is right for both of us.

Would you believe better than 500 FPM? Actually I think it was around 7-800 FPM. At 14,000 feet. With a normally aspirated engine. As soon as I get new radios and qualify the airplane for IFR, I'll be able to enter the FLIGHT LEVELS.

I got mine to 17500 before my fingernails turned blue. Still had 500 fpm climb going. I believe one of our members got his normally aspirated 180 above FL250 back in the day.

Yep Bob that was BC Roemer, he held the world record at 25600 until Dick Rutan and then later one of my local guys broke his record in a beefed up RV-3 that still holds the record. After that Bruce B has been laying low.

No way. Or, way. I need to get this thing IFR'ed so I can hit the flight levels and see how high she flies. Plus see what life is like with a 65 knot tailwind.
