Nice. It’s been a long time since I flew mine after dark. No interior lights.

Very nice Les - come visit me in Angel Fire - I'm here most days getting paid to hang out at the airport. Jeff - I had no interior lights for awhile - I'll deny I ever typed this, but for awhile I flew with a head lamp on the red setting at night. Then decided to go all out and went to Checker O'Rielly Air Parts and got a red LED strip, tucked it up in front of the roll bar and plugged it into a cig lighter with an on/off switch - blew a whole 18 jeeters on the setup. Werks reel gud.

Fraze, Whacha doin at Angel Fire? Heard a while ago you may heading out there. Yeah, I’d like to visit. I like to have a mission when I go to fly. Comin to see a Thorpie is top of the list. Lately I’ve done some trips to scout places in the national forest for shooting, horseback riding, and camping kinda stuff. Will be in touch sometime soon.

Here’s a simple video from a few years ago around Eagles Nest in the same valley, just North of Angel Fire. I’m sure you’ll recognize it.

Wearing a head lamp is how was staying night current.

I did a night cross country in an airplane I didn’t own one night. It was daylight when I launched. No gyros. Had to turn on the iPhone flashlight and fly with it tucked into my belt. I decided I didn’t like night flying without any gyros so I installed a G5 in the Thorp shortly after that. I haven’t flown the Thorp after dark since. The G5 probably eliminates the need for a light.

Hey Les - Darc and I moved here a couple of months ago and as luck would have it, the Colfax County powers that be decided to pay me to hang out at the local airport - Since I've being doing that for free for years, I thought I might take them up on that. They hung an "airport manager" sign around my neck and here I sit. I get to drive a big boy toy (cat 928) when the snow flies (Think Forest Gump on his riding mower), fuel planes, take tip and look pretty. I'm excelling at it so far.....the pretty part at least......KAXX.....KLAX only has ONE "X"....I have two!! Come see me - watch the x-winds though as well as the DA - though I have 8900 ft of runway that will take a regional jet!

In my time as a military pilot I, accumulated 205 combat missions at night. We were always concerned about glare of the cockpit lights on the canopy. We would spend time on the preflight taping over pesky lights to include the Master Caution and Warning light (You can see them through duct tape at night!). Since I have yet to fly my Thorp at night, I wonder if that is a problem with our birds?

My MGL display does not dim enough for night flight but the IPad does. I have a piece of the static cling limo shade stuff that i punched holes in so it hangs across the display on the few times I fly after dark. It won’t cling to the display itself. It is not unusual for us to launch from somewhere about sunset and fly home in the dark.
