Thorp Air Command - T18.net

I found this propeller and the original pitch is 67''.
Original diameter is 74 inches but after I mesure the prop has only 67'' diameter.
So this is a 67''x67''. No problem to re-pitch to 72'' or 74'' but 3 and a half inches is missing on each tip.
Is this a good prop to put on my plane or the best of the blade is cut long time ago????
I want to put my money on the good stuff and I don't want to play test pilot!

NEVER use a cut down aluminum prop on a Thorp.
We had many break in the past. Bad harmonics suspected.

BobMoe ... that statement is not TRUE! The cut down 76EM is flying on many Thorps and was deemed safe years ago. Details on the prop testing are available in the newsletter archive.

Theirry unfortunately the M74 that you have is NOT SAFE. As far as cut down metal props go the Sensenich 76EM is the only one deemed safe.

There are several Thorp pilots/owners that have gone from metal to wood and or CS that have 76EM laying around. You may try putting a WANTED ad out on the Forum.

There is a RV builder that has a 74EM brand new, used one test flight on a RV with a 150 HP. He will take $1250 plus freight

Hum...I need to know more about this propeller. At this stage I hold for a quote from Catto for a 2 blades 68x72/74 with the leading edge protection.
I need to find a metal prop or a wood prop with a good protection. Too much rain in Quebec during the summer season.

I put a Sensenich Carbon Fiber Adjustable pitch propeller on my wife's RV-4. It has 3 adjustment pins with a different pitch set stop on each end, for 6 pitch setting choices. It has nickel leading edges.
It does cost more than a CATTO, but it offers a choice of pitch settings without sending it back to the prop man.
I have a CATTO on my RV-8, and I'm also happy with that. It's an old style 2 blade, without the newer profile or leading edge protection. Craig hit my engine power & Speed range, even with the odd ball Mazda Rotary and left hand rotation. Nothing like a T-18 with a 3 blade CATTO!
Then again, I have a 1980's vintage Ted Hendricks on my T-18, and that's been great too. The hardened leading edge has held up over the years, but I do slow down in the rain, under 2200 RPM.

I have a 74EM prop that is 70" long and the pitch is 68". It has about 150 hours on my Thorp before the engine( 150 hp) and prop were changed. I PM'd you if you would like to talk.

Does anyone have a spare 72FM8 prop lying around in the hangar? This is the propeller that shows up mostly on 180hp RVs. I'm looking for one with at least 85" of pitch to help break-in a 180hp lycoming. I'm interested in either buying or borrowing. I found that some Thorp owners were trying them out back in 2004 (newsletter #128).

I am looking a T-18 with a wood prop but I would need to change it. Neither me nor the plane are IFR but it is likely I will be VFR in some weather. Are the composite props okay to fly in the rain and/or snow?

I believe that the Cato, Seninich and Whirlwind propellers all have an option for the nickel leading edges that are OK to fly in rain. I'm not sure but there may be other props out there as well.

While I am a long way off for needing a prop, currently I'm leaning towards the whirlwind ground adjustable. I know there were several thorps at Oshkosh that had them and they were happy with them.

We have two members in the Puget Sound area that are completely satisfied with Whirlwind Composite Adjustable Pitch Propellers, and when I change out my wood Hendrickson I will likely also go to a Whirl Wind.
