OK, I have to say that I already had a Dynon D100 installed in my panel, but I had never utilized the AOA portion of the display because I thought I had to have to dynon pitot/AOA boom, which costs about $500 for the heated version. I saw on VAF some guys were using the Dynon AOA display through a pop rivet on the wing. So I thought I would give it a go for myself.

So, I found a plastic 90* pitot/static fitting (with a barbed end) sitting around, and connected it to some 1/4' tubing I bought from home depot for $2.13 (for 20 feet of it!). I then put the barbed end of the pitot fitting on my grinder and shaved the barbed end to where it had an angle of about 30 degrees. I had an existing hole cut in the underside of my fuse where an old stall horn blade lived, but I removed. I slipped the barbed pitot fitting through this hole, and secured it so it wouldn't move while flying. It worked perfectly on the first flight today (after one calibration run).

It is great to have AOA, but I must admit, the D100 AOA indicator is a little small. I may get used to using it, but its great to have.

Ryan: What did you calibrate it with ? I guess someone is going to have to explain to me why we need an AOA indicator in a day VFR aircraft ?

I re-read my original post and found it confusing too. I will try and post some pictures soon. Its dirt simple and it works. I didn't think I had to have the AOA, but since the D100 has the capability and it didn't cost me anything, I figured why not? The D100 install manual describes how to calibrate the display.

This is all there is to it......toes not included!. I had a plastic 90 degree pitot fitting that was barbed on one end and had threads on the other. I mounted under the fuse and connected the tubing to my D100. That simple and it works.

Good for you Ryan . Glad it fills that space on the EFIS . Looks like you could use a little Fungi Nail on those toes ! You could sell that fitting for $50.00 !

I known this is an old post but I have a solution to the Unheated version.

Here is what I did:
I designed my own Pitot/AOA probe using CAD.
Then 3D printed it using ABS.

Here are some pictures.






















After some sanding I then glued everything together, then polished it.

Your AOA looks outstanding. Much more elegant that my solution for sure. I think you will enjoy having it. My AOA has audio (from the Dynon) that sends beeps to my headset. As I get closer to stall, the rate of beeps increase. I use the beeps on every landing and no longer look inside the cockpit during landing for airspeed checks. It has also alerted me on one occasion during a turn to final. I think its a nice addition.

Ryan, the beeps sound ideal. Does the calibration work with accelerated stalls? While I doubt it would be a problem, I've wondered if funky aerodynamics might throw off the calibration.

I've always liked Cessna's pneumatic stall horn -- same results and no electronics required!

David Read's electronics call out the speed as he slows. That works well, too.
