Joe,
I don't think the bill of sale info is public.

The vast majority of T-18's are going for $30K +/- 3K ... 40K is not realistic (unfortunately).

My city based my taxes on what I actually paid for the plane. Have you showed them a copy of the bill of sale?

Taxes, Taxes ! I went to the County of San Diego to gather info on "use tax" for my S-18. I left the newly built County Assessors office thinking I would be assessed the comp of what other Thorps were going for on BarnStormers and Trade-A-Plane. Doing some more research on the County wed site I found a small "out of the way" paragraph pertaining to "vehicles" that are built (boats and A/C included). It appears the County of San Diego can only charge you tax on the actual cost to build, not what the A/C is worth. So naturally I put down $25,000 on the form. Also being that the A/C is more than 35 years old, it qualifies as a "Historical Aircraft Designation." As long as I "show the plane" (airshows, T-18 fly-ins, etc.) to the public 12 days a year, I pay no County tax.

Now I have to deal with the State of California Board of Equalization (Franchise tax board). Where will the madness end ! [:0]

Joe, if there is room in the B&B, I say grab it. I'd rather see all of the rooms booked by Throp group folks. On April 1 any rooms not booked will be opened to the general public.

It's always best to check the complex tax laws before purchase and plan accordingly. There can be sales/use tax and also property tax that applies in the state purchased as well as the state it goes to. Some states have even placed a tax on visiting aircraft that stay 'too' long. As for Sale$ tax, some states have an exemption for occasional or isolated sale. That is the case for Kansas which also has a property tax exemption for AC over 30 years old or used for business. They regularly download the FAA owner database and contact owners well (as in years) after the sale. Then ask for documentation on a sale that is exempt and thus does not need such. Buyer beware and document. I am not a lawyer but act as one on my own behalf... so standard disclaimers apply.
