Thanks Bob,
It is usually 4 figure/numbers ion the ICAO flight Plan which we now use, which is why I ask.

Thanks,
Brian.

I just say, "Tango one eight" to ATC. Might have a dash in it.

On the form or over the telephone they usually ask for four figures, such as my Debonair is a BE33? With no dash, but perhaps they use the dash with the T-18?? When I run mine to to Canada I am sure I will find out.

The designator is defined as "not longer than four characters, and will generally begin with a letter.' I used to fly a Bellanca Decathlon, and BL8 covered all models of the Decathlon and the Scout. The codes are strictly alpha numeric, no dashes, dots, squiggles...

Thanks Dave,
Live and learn. I have had my ear bashed for not having 4 letter/numbers, but then perhaps I should have known that the B33 is actually a BE33!!!

There's a chap on YouTube who flies an Ercoupe, and he's always having to phonetically spell out his 'ERCO' designator to ATC! They don't seem to know what an Ercoupe is. BTW, you can probably find the full designator list online. Like any good government-published document, it's probably good for light reading at bedtime!

For reference, a PDF file of all the ICAO designators can be found on the ICAO website here::

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://cfapp.icao.int/Doc8643/reports/Part2-By%2520Type%2520Designator(Decode).pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjL4-zb2KfnAhUszjgGHZ4lBJ4QFjAAegQIBxAC&usg=AOvVaw0zoHhXqTpcyFHOqjwwUHUF

The entry for the Thorp is on page 76::

T18 - CLASSIC SPORT, S-18. - L1P L
SUNDERLAND, S-18. - L1P L
THORP, Tiger. - L1P L
THORP, T-18 Tiger. - L1P L

Many thanks, a bit of light reading and the 4 symbol code that I thought.
Thanks,

T18 is the designator. The last column is the aircraft description. L1P L is used on other aircraft on that page, as well. Has to do with weight, type of propulsion (Piston), etc...

Just discovered this handy FAA website:

https://www.icao.int/publications/DOC86 ... earch.aspx

Type Thorp in Manufacturer. The choices are:
T-18
T-211
