AS A POINT, IF I WERE GOING TO MAKE A NEW CONICAL ENGINE MOUNT I WOULD MAKE A JOG IN IT SO THAT I DIDN'T NEED A IMPULSE MAG ON THE LEFT SIDE.
I'VE COME ACROSS TWO PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD EXTENSIVE EXPERENCE FLYING THE RV-3 AND THORP-18 AND BOTH SAID THE SAME THING, DO YOU WANT TO FLY A MIATA OR A FERRARI?
JERRY HOOVER AND I JUST PUT ELECTRIC TRIM ON HIS PLANE 100:1 LINEAR ACTUATOR, WORKS GREAT, I MADE THE RELAY SYSTEM AND USED A BICYCLE HAND BRAKE CABLE TO DRIVE IT . WORKS GREAT.
PULLED THE # 1 JUG ON MY ENGINE THIS WEEK,SEEPING OIL AT THE BASE, NEW SILICONE O RING, BUT PULLED THE CARB TOO AND NOTICED THAT THE HOLE THAT GOES UP THRU THE OIL PAN IS RATHER CRUDE IN THAT THEY JUST BORED OUT THE HOLE AND AS IT TRANSITIONS INTO THE SPIDER WEB. THERE IS A SHARP EDGE, NOT BLENDED AS YOU MIGHT THINK IT SHOULD BE INTO THE INTAKE PORTS. ANYWAY I GOT OUT MY GRINDER AND GOT RID OR THE SHARP EDGE AND NOW HAVE EXPERENCED IN INCREASE OF 40kts IN AIR SPEED WOULD YOU BELIEVE???? PAUL MACMICHAEL TACOMA WA. WHERE THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES

Thinking out loud, The purpose of the aluminum horseshoe was to adapt the GPU to have a way to mount the engine. I would be inclined to make a conventional conical mount and eliminate the horseshoe all together.

I wish I had more time. I have a fixture to make a dynafocal mount. I could Mount a dynafocal engine, remove it and substitute a conical mount engine and build a conical mount.

Bill,
I agree with JTball. You really do have a great idea. I wish you had more time too. You could certainly count me in for a mount if you did decide to make some. I wonder if there is enough flat backs out there though, to make it worth you time and effort. The aluminum horseshoe, as you call it, is turning out to be an expensive and complex venture. The alternative, another idea you posted a while back, that of taking the engine to Divco and having the rear of the engine case modified to a Dynafocal, I think, is probably a better idea, for about the same money, than fabricating a ring. However, your ideal of fabricating a pure conical mount, sounds a whole lot better.
