Thorp Air Command - T18.net

Does anybody have a good idea for exhaust hangers? I saw this setup but don't know what kind of rubber to use.

Here's one implementation, it's a heavy woven material like a fire hose. Is it a good idea? I don't know but as far as I can tell from going through the logs it's been on the airplane since day one and the airplane has been flying for the last 52 years. It's attached to the A frame with 2 adel clamps

I don't know where I found them now, but I have a small spring that hangs from the engine mount and connect to the exhaust. Spring attaches to an adel clamp from the engine mount.

I used exhaust hangers I bought from NAPA. They are this style: https://www.amazon.com/Walker-36274-Exh ... 9WJ6&psc=1

I cut my first set down so they were mounted vertical but I didn’t like the vibration being transmitted to the airframe. I mounted the new ones without cutting and hung them so they curve down. The vibration was greatly reduced.

I used pieces of automotive serpentine belts. Got them for free at a local garage.

Hi Guys,
Mine is like the photo, but using stainless steel shim stock. Perhaps .025” thick. Stainless is low conduction, heat proof and shouldn’t need replacement. In engineering it would be called a “flexure”. Relatively holds things in place in all but one direction. Just be sure it has smooth edges. Wouldn’t recommend aluminum.
