I was talking to a guy at work today about expenditures, flying, etc ... He was complaining about the $1000 brake job he just had done on his wife's SUV. I told him it was high time he buy a set of tools.
For what it's worth autogas in the air makes me nervous, as do auto engines. With that in mind I'm locked into the price of avgas. The next time my car needs a brake job, wife's car needs body work, a/c goes out, house repairs etc ... I fix it myself. As I'm cursing in the heat under a jacked car with my hands caked in grease/brake dust/ and or whatever the project happens to be, I tell myself, "with the money you saved from not having someone else do this you can fill up the airplane with liquid gold avgas!"
Around here Avgas is 5.50, Autogas is 3.50. For an hour of punching holes in the sky (much more that I normally do) that's a $20 spread. I'll keep fixing my own broken stuff, refuse to take up golf and eat roman noodles to keep from sweating the price of gas. There are enough variables in the air, I don't want to add that one too.
This is not a cheap hobby but I know boat owners, golfers and car enthusiasts that envy us for the bang for the buck we get out of our airplanes.
