I used Hinderliter Heat Treating, 2005 Montgomery Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76107-4012. Phone: 817-737-6651.
This was back in 1996 for three individual gear legs, heat treated and stress relieved for $333.53.
I made them in two parts with a plate slightly larger diameter in the center of the "A" to be welded together later without affecting the heat treating.
I didn't have a hydraulic press so I used a hydraulic jack and heavy chain to straighten out the heat treatment distortion, bow and arrow style.

Is there any way to tell if the gear has or has not been heat treated on a completed aircraft?
I have just had my second "initial interview" this time an S-18.
While going thru the accumulated paperwork, and looking over the aircraft for the first time, it would be nice to check the gear.
Should a file just slide along the material, if heat treated? Whereas non heat treated the file would start to bite? Or is that too general?
Not all builders kept a construction journal, so it can be hard to tell some details.

Is there a receipt for the gear for Classic sport or Brock? Or did the builder build the gear? The better part of the time the Gear is purchased or bartered. Just curious....Dan

Actually, when my wife and I flew into the local airport to meet the sellers and get a ride out to the house where the S-18 is kept, there was a miscommunication, so we had some time on our hands.
A nice 'Quiet Birdman' was sitting there in the club house, so I asked him if he knew the builder, which he knew. Then he offered that he had done all the welding.
A ride then appeared, in the form of another friend of the deceased builder and his family. A good summary of the builder, the aircraft and history accompanied the ride.
