Thorp Air Command - T18.net

Got one sweet 4 pipe set up from custom exhaust! I'm going to have the only smooth bottom cowl thorp and still have a carb I think! It's a forward facing carb (HA-6) anyways thinking I should have everything done and ready to run but this tomorrow. Trying to make sun n fun!!! Question is how did you make you exhaust hangars? I've seen some just looking for something quick and easy (yeah right)

I put an Adel clamp around the lower gear cross bar...don't remember the size ? Then attached a piece of reinforced rubber strip (the kind they use to make muffler hangers) to the Adel clamp and then attached that to the supplied steel clamps from Custom Aircraft that go around the pipes. You don't want a rigid set up. It needs to "float" with the ball joint on the exhaust. Thought I had a pic, but no.

I used the aramid fiber fan belt out of my 90 Chevy pickup, had an old one laying around it is the flat belt. Will handle the heat, they don't stretch, they don't break. Adel clamp, 2 no10-32 Stainless cap screws, nylocs and it was done in 30 min. Use a good shape set of snips, aramid fiber is tough stuff...Dan

I suppose I could have used the fan belt off my 1950 Ford 8-N tractor, they last 30 years ! I should know I just replaced one !

In one of the newsletters Dick Penman submitted a really nice sketch of his exhaust hangers.... he cut tabs out of a tire sidewall. one end of the rubber was bolted to the A-frame cross tube, the other to a stainless strip. The stainless strip was clamped to the pipe.

There was also a picture of a really nice bent up wire affair in another newsletter. It had a couple of spring loops (like on a clothes pin) between the pipe and the cross-tube. Shouldn't take more than a half hour to make a pair out of welding rod.

Another alternative is to just wrap a bunch of coathanger wire around the pipes and the cross tube. Don't ask me how I know.

Make two small loops from 1/8 aircraft cable , nicopress the two ends together, twist in a figure eight and use hose clamps to secure.

I like the tire rubber route. The bent up solid wires tend to fatigue and break.

Oh and Chris dont want to rain on your parade because you're doing a great job getting that bird back in operation but several of us have smooth cowls and carbs. A few of us have horizontally inducted sumps others have 90 deg elbows and bolt the ha6 to that. But your thingin the right way the smooth no scoop cowl sure does the airplane right!

Here's how I did the hangers. Took about 15 min. each to make, Adel clamp, piece of reinforced rubber, a small piece of of angle and a few AN-3 bolts and high temp. nuts. The metal "loops" around the pipes came with the exhaust.

I just replaced my hangers with a piece of conveyor belt. Truck mud flap might work too.
