I know I have asked similar questions in the past, but I would like to ask another. I am seriously considering purchasing an IO-360-M1B which has the rear prop governor (the prop governer will be under the oil filter) and the horizontally mounted spin on oil filter and takes a dynofocal type 1 engine mount. Does anyone know if I will have clearance issues (between the engine and firewall) with the oil filter and/or prop governor?

Any suggestions or other issues I might have with installing this model engine on a Thorp airframe?
Also, any prop recommendations? I have placed a call to Hartzell but I am currently waiting on their response.

I thought it prudent to at least ask these questions before buying something so expensive.

Ryan,
I'd be guessing. I do not think you will have clearance issues with the firewall. I would be more concerned about the mount. However, we have guys on this list that can make anything like that happen. Is that a parallel valve engine?

Ryan,

I have an IO-320 D1A that looks the same as what is in your picture except mine has a remote filter. The prop govoner is below where your filter is. I know that when my engine was installed a different mount was required for clearance purposes. The old dynafocal mount had a hoop and the new one is different at the top, above the mags. I will try take pictures tomorrow of both mounts.

The Campion filter will most likely NOT fit. A K&N PH1009 fill fit or you can go the remote route.

I believe you WILL have a clearance problem with the filter and the motor mount . I know I did with my 0-360 . I did not try the K & N filter option . I just went with a remote and use Tempest filters...the LONG ones ! O0

I dont know if its a parrallel valve or not. I have that question submitted to them and I am awaiting the answer. Does it matter which kind as far as fitting on the airplane, or was there something else you were thinking?

Jim and Rich,
I can handle getting a remote oil filter installed (thats good to know, thank you). That way I can stick with an aircraft oil filter, but where did you guys purchase a mount that worked for your applications?

The angle valve engine is not a great fit for the T-18. Weight and size issues.

Go to the NL's , they have a boat load of info on filters, adapters and remotes . As for what I did I went with the Canton Racing Products bolt on engine adapter and their remote filter housing. Solid billet aluminum and MADE IN AMERICA . Other have used the standard cast auto remote filter housing with success . I also believe there is a cast engine adapter . Both the engine and remote are FORD adapters...I think ? O0

The easiest way to tell an angle valve it has flat valve covers . Straight valve has domed covers. The picture is a straight valve,
I would think the only problem you would have with this engine is oil filter clearance. The mount fixture I have will fit it. Price is right? Buy it. It will make a Thorp perform like a tiger.

Bill, is your motor mount custom made or can I buy one off the shelf somewhere? If its an off the shelf type motor mount, what kind is it?

It's a standard mount from classic. I copied a mount and made the fixture

Ryan,

Here are pictures that show the difference in the mounts. The second is the O-320/360 mount and the first is the Io-320/360 mount. I hope this works.

My mount will fit any Lyc O series, the problem would be the location of the fuel system which could be modified to fit. The mount will fit all except the rear mounted carb/injector which I modified to work on N30WW. I'll send you the ring to try, you pay shipping.

The dynafocal ring is different only because who made it.

my seller took his motor off the market. I believe he decided he could get more for it than what we had agreed on. So, if anyone has a lead on a worthwhile 360 engine, please let me know. I would prefer to buy an engine prop combo, but I'll take what I can get.
