If you have not made one...especially for your S-18, don't wait as long as I did to make mine. Do it now. It only took about 2 hours (maybe less) and the cost was about $25.00. If you have limited space, this little baby will keep your wing tucked away in a safe place. It WILL make your life a lot easier ! [;)]

1. Furniture dolly from HF tools..on sale about $15.00 ?
2. 1/2 sheet of MDF 3/4". I had a piece collecting dust.
3. Roll of PSA 3/4" wide window weather stripping...peel and stick. About $5.00 ?
4. 1 3/4" dry wall screws.
5. Gorilla cement.

Whether you know it or not, you just directed that at me - probably outa make sure the vert wood lines up with the ribs?

I hadn't thought about the ribs ? I don't think it is necessary, most of the weight is on the leading edge. Mine are built super strong ! A builder should have this thang as soon as the wings are started !

Have something very similar - I used 2" nylon web from the top to the bottom to create a sling. Less pressure points & it works for everyting from a J-3 to a Thorp

That sounds like a winner also ! Maybe use it for some other kinky purpose ? [:p]

Gearing up for a paint job on my bird and I like your wing sling. what are the rough dimensions? I can figure out the top via the pic, what's the base? or should I just "wing it"!

I suppose I could let you wing it [}:)] , but here are the ruff numbers.

Base-2'x 3'
Height-3'
Top: About 8" wide.
The slope has to be such that the wings do not touch at the trailing edges when both are stored.

The base was made to no real size other than to cover the large HF furniture moving dolly. I did made one change to the base. The "curved" portion (I used a rib template from the drawings) where the leading edge sits was too tight. I just cut the edge of the opening a bit so the wing leading edge has a little more room to sit in. [;)]

I wish I had made this craddle when I first started building my wings, rather than moving them from one place to another one wing at a time. Best 2 hours I have spent in a long time. BADA BING, BADA BOOM ! [:D]

I'm pretty excited to finally "have wings" and will get pictures soon. In the process I saw the need for a cradle as well, but made mine with different thoughts in mind, and figured I'd mention it to anyone else. I hoped to have some protection for the wings in case something fell down on it, or in my own stupidity rolled it into something. I also had visions of tying it down in a trailer or something in case it had to be moved.

Mine is made like a swing set from 2 x 4's, about 5 ft tall, and as long as the wings are. It's kind of an "A" frame with stubby extensions at the floor so it almost resembles a "W". Instead of trying to match the airfoil in plywood, I simply hung nylon webbing low, across the "V" in 4 places; it takes the shape of the wing without pressure points as it hangs there. A strip of carpet on each helps soften it, too.

Rich is right; a cradle is something you gotta have. It's hardly possible to attack both sides of a wing to finish rivetting. And it should make for good painting and storage.

One Rich Brazell copy (sort of) of the wing sling fresh off the assembly line (patent pending!). it cost about $30 for casters, hardware and weather stripping (already had the wood).
